SUPPORT SALMA IN HER FANTASTIC CAUSE

RAISING money in a fun way but for a serious cause is the next project on the agenda for award-winning sportswoman Salma Bi.
The Birmingham-based cricketer will stage her second annual World Dodgeball event in January next year.
All funds raised will go to Acid Survivors Trust International, a global organisation which provides crucial support to victims of acid attacks all over the world.
Over the past two years Salma has helped raised thousands of pounds for numerous charities through women-led sporting events.
These have included 10-hour and 20-hour futsal marathons, two T10 indoor World Cup Cricket tournaments and last year's World Dodgeball showpiece.
Salma's events not only collect much-needed funds for deserving causes, they also promote the importance of more female participation in sports.
The 27-year-old haemodialysis nurse, who was the first Asian woman cricketer to play for Worcestershire CC, stages her fund-raisers under two sporting organisations she runs - MAD (Making a Difference) Productions and Sporting Pathways.
Co-founder Salma had a fantastic 2013 cricket season for Worcester and her clubs Five Ways, Wall and Hawarden Park.
Her off-spinners made her leading wicket taker across the board which earned her the honour of training with the England women's squad pre their Ashes series.
Salma is very passionate about getting others involved in sport, and her hard work was recognised when she was recently a finalist in the Birmingham Sportswoman of The Year awards.
She is a past winner of the Asian Women of Achievement Sports award and the British-Asian Services to Sport accolade.
Sporting Pathways has also introduced a project called 'Get Her in The Game' which highlighted the development of Solihull Ladies footballer Saddiqa Shan, who was subsequently shortlisted for not only this year's Asian Achievers Awards but also the Asian Football Awards at Wembley.
Sporting Pathways also has its very own Futsal team the Great White Sharks which competes in the Birmingham Women's Wednesday League and recently played their 100th match.
Striker Vicky Roe, also a Solihill player, has netted over 100 goals for the team.
With five events already hosted by Sporting Pathways it's now back to business again with Dodgeball, a sport particularly big in the United States which involves players on two teams trying to throw large balls at each other while avoiding being hit themselves.
Last year saw the European Mammoths crowned 2013 champions at the inaugural Birmingham event.
Salma said: "We were delighted to greet teams from Manchester, London, Wales and Yorkshire, as well as the European Mammoths all the way from Brighton.
"Natasha Perry led the team to victory and deserved the title for all day they showed charisma and team work.
"Now we look for the next sign-ups for 2014. It is only £10 to register, all for a good cause.
"Sporting Pathways are putting across a special message - a rule in Dodgeball is NO headshots, they count as elimination.
"It will also remind us of acid attack survivors, who experience such trauma they become nothing but suicidal.
"We want to raise the awareness of providing treatment for these people.
"There are more and more victims suffering, but before they take their lives we can give them a new life. A small donation which will contribute to a surgical procedure.
"Let's raise money to make a difference and get more women involved in sports at the same time."
WORLD DODGEBALL 2014
The event will involve six teams comprising six players each.
Each team plays each other twice (total 10 games)
There will then be semi-finals and a final.
Planned teams: Arctic Whales, American Coyotes, European Mammoths, African Meerkats, Asian Cobras, Australian Kangaroos.
For your entry fee you get: food, drinks, T-shirts, medals, trophies, certificates and prizes.

SUPER SEASON FOR SPINNER SALMA!

Pics (from top): Salma; Salma, Saddi and Aisha; Salma and Ian Bell MBE

ANOTHER season complete and more records set – quite a season for award-winning cricketer Salma Bi!
Summer 2013 saw Salma represent the following clubs:
Five Ways Old Edwardians CC Women
Five Ways Old Edwardians CC 3rds Men’s Team
Worcestershire County
Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC)
Hawarden Park CC North Wales

Her all-round bowling performance for the season reads: 204 overs, 49 maidens, 44 wickets.
Salma not only took a five-wicket haul against Wolverhampton, but also finished with best bowling averages too.
She was leading wicket taker in the Women’s Midland Leagues with 24 (88 career) and runner-up in her club teams with 39 wickets (224 since 2005).
Given the opportunity to play at Lord’s, Salma represented MCC Women v Japan in a tour game which will always bring back memories, playing alongside Ebony Rainsford and Caroline Atkins under the captaincy of England’s No1 batswoman Clare Taylor.
Salma’s batting did a lot of talking this season too.
Playing for Five Ways Men’s 3rds, she kept a cool facing an opening bowler moving the ball around and sending in the occasional bouncers.
He soon found Salma is not one to play safe as she hit him for six!
Playing in a T20’s Women’s final match, Salma was sent in to open, hitting 15 runs off the first over followed by back-to-back boundaries and gaining a free hit.
On May 6, 2013, Salma appeared on TV Live on the Islam Channel for a talk show highlighting her struggles and achievements to date.
She answered questions such as how she juggles life as a nurse and sports star, captaining her midweek Futsal team Great White Sharks and running coaching sessions at the S&S Indoor Cricket Centre in Birmingham.
A regular media pundit, Salma had the privilege of watching live ICC Champions Trophy matches and meeting top players, as well as covering the phone-in commentary live on the BBC Asian Network.
During her time in the limelight Salma was invited to bowl to the England Women in preparation for the Ashes, turning up to practice as the only non-international player.
She bowled three hours straight and raised some eyebrows. The coaches did nothing but applaud Salma’s bowling ability and didn’t miss out on the chance to film the session.
Salma later that week went down to support Pakistan play Ireland at Moseley Cricket Club not aware that during the interval she would be called up to show off more of her bowling skills in front of the Pakistan coach.
This summer saw Salma concentrate more on her cricket and less on Sporting Pathways events.
However, this does not mean she has stopped helping others.
Through her developing project ‘Get Her in The Game’ Salma introduced us to Birmingham’s football sensation Saddiqa Shan, a 21-year-old Premier League footballer who hit the headlines after being shortlisted for the Asian Achievers Awards – Sports Personality of the Year 2013 and yet to come Asian Football Awards 2013 – Woman in Football Award 2013. #BelieveTheHype
YouTube videos also raised profiles of Sporting Pathways ambassadors.
Recently, Salma received a delightful surprise when she got the call to inform her she was a finalist at the first ever Birmingham Sports Awards, which took place on September 19 at Edgbaston.
Salma was honoured to go up on stage to receive the finalist award for all Contributions to Sports presented by Ian Bell MBE for SportsWoman of the Year alongside World Triathlon Champion Jodie Stimpson and Paralympic tennis player Jordanne Whiley.
After another eventful season, Salma knows she has nothing to prove.
Achieving such great heights, Salma is grateful for all that she has worked hard for.
An England call-up may come but if not Salma knows she has enough under her belt to say she has set the standards for the younger generation to follow.
She has now set a legacy and can only hope if she is to do something next it will be nothing but bigger and better!
Salma looks forward to taking on a new team which she will introduce at the men’s Wall Cricket Club and relishes the prospect of leading her indoor Five Ways Zombies Cricket Team.
Salma has also not long signed up for Solihull FC alongside her younger sister Aisha.

SADDI AND SALMA - CREATING PATHWAYS TOGETHER

Sisters in sport: Salma (left) and Saddi

MOST of us have heard of Amir Khan and Shahid Afridi, but how about Ibtihaj Muhammad or Sania Mirza?
All four are accomplished Asian sporting figures who follow the Muslim faith.
But while male role models Khan and Afridi enjoy great wealth and worldwide adulation through their successes in the sports of boxing and cricket respectively, female icons Ibtihaj, an international fencer, and top level tennis talent Mirza receive nothing like the same recognition.
We live in the 21st century, yet still even these days the very mention of Asian women succeeding in sport can be met with an element of surprise, or even disdain.
However, times are changing and two young female pioneers from Birmingham are determined to buck the trend.
Cricketer Salma Bi and footballer Saddiqa Shan have already proved what they are capable of - but now they aim to inspire many others to be like them.
Saddiqa, popularly known as Saddi, has joined forces with Salma to promote Sporting Pathways, a scheme set up in the Birmingham area to increase female participation in sport.
National award-winning Salma made history as the first Muslim girl to play for Worcestershire County Cricket Club and Saddi also achieved a first as the first ever Muslim female to represent Solihull Ladies FC, who have just been promoted to the Midland Combination League.
It's not always the norm for an Asian girl to participate in any form of sports outside school hours or above the age of 16.
Yet despite facing family pressures, criticism, lack of financial support or a guide to put them on the right track, Salma and Saddi found the paths to achieve their goals.
They now want others like them with similar ambitions to do the same.
Salma, 27, not only plays cricket for women's teams, she also turns out regularly for men's sides in the Birmingham area.
She is among the few club coach level 2 and level 1 umpires running sessions at the state-of-the art S&S Indoor Cricket Centre in Birmingham.
Despite her sporting commitments, Salma has also managed to host record-breaking charity events under the banner of Sporting Pathways - Raising Profiles, which have included 10 and 20-hour futsal marathons, two indoor T10 World Cup cricket tournaments and a World Dodge Ball competition, since March last year.
The reason for organising these events was two-fold - raise money for deserving causes and encourage female participation in sport.
Salma also runs the first ever Asian futsal team to compete in the Birmingham League - The Great White Sharks.
As well as being a prolific wicket taker in county and club cricket with her spin bowling, Salma represents the MCC and recently played against Japan.
A regular pundit for the BBC Asian Network and an ambassador for many sporting projects, she is also guiding the sporting careers of her sisters.
Aisha, 18, has been offered a futsal scholarship, while Anisha, 17, is a Warwickshire U17s player.
The cost of living does not pay for itself, though, and Salma has to combine all of her sporting activities with a career as a dialysis nurse.
For some time, Salma has ploughed a lone furrow in her mission to get more Asian women involved in sport, but now Saddi has joined her as an ambassador for Sporting Pathways.
The 21-year-old has already made waves as part of this season's promotion-winning Solihull squad and her input was highlighted when she won the Players' Player of the Season Award.
Saddi is turning heads by being unique in her ways of not only playing football but believing in herself no matter how tough things can get.
She was offered a soccer scholarship with FirstPoint USA but missed out due to certain barriers at that stage in her life.
However, this did not stop her later getting opportunities to play for West Bromwich Albion and Birmingham City teams before signing for Solihull.
She still does development work with Birmingham City and occasionally for Warwickshire Cricket Board alongside her quest to eventually play football at the highest level in the FA Super League.
Saddi also represents the football team at Coventry University, where she is studying physiotherapy with the prospect of running her own clinic in the near future.
She has also joined the Great White Sharks, who play in the Birmingham Futsal League Premiership every Wednesday.
Having gained the experience of doing voluntary work and organising exhibition events, Saddi looks forward to working alongside Salma promoting sporting activities across the country with the prospect of working towards her coaching badges, as well aiming to become a role model for the younger generation.
One of the best ways of highlighting talent is by bringing it all together under one roof at a glitz event.
In October, the Asian Football Awards will be staged at Wembley, the home of football and a platform to make dreams come true.
Saddi is one of the nominees for the Asian Female Footballer of the Year accolade. If she was to win it, it would be the first piece of recognition for her talents.
"We all create our own journey in the hope that one day we will achieve our dreams," said Salma.
"If we can't grasp one opportunity, we can find a way to create another one that gets us closer to our goals.
"Being an Asian female can mean we need to sacrifice a lot either for family or personal reasons because that's how society sees it, but we can also be proud to be Asian because that's what makes us stand out, and against all odds get that one bit closer to the ultimate goal."

SADDI CAN BE A SENSATION!

THE famous movie Bend It Like Beckham is a story of every football-mad Asian girl's dream.
But while the adventures of Jesminder "Jess" Bhamra are fictitious, there are many real-life stories out there of Asian femmes making an impact on the soccer stage.
One such example is SADDI SHAN, a 21-year-old prospect being tipped for international honours.
In her younger years Saddi attended Bordesley Village Primary School and aged nine was the first girl in the area selected to join the Gifted and Talented scheme.
Her talent further blossomed when she trialled for Aston Villa's Under-11 squad.
Later, attending a girls' school did not keep Saddi away from the sport she loves.
She captained Sutton Coldfield Grammar School for Girls, the team winning the Keele Cup and Regional Seven-A-Side Power League Tournament three years running.
PE teacher Mrs Peel was the force behind the girls, making it possible for the team to participate in tournaments by providing transport and she referred Saddi to academies at West Bromwich Albion and Birmingham City football clubs.
Saddi grew up playing alongside her brothers and people in the community in her local park on many an evening up until twilight.
However, things are not always easy living in a Muslim-Pakistani family, as girls wearing shorts outside of school can be frowned upon.
After a spell away from the game, Saddi returned in 2008 and made history by becoming the first ever Asian girl to join West Midlands Regional League Premier Division team Solihull Ladies.
She assisted the team to the edge of promotion, with second position achieved in 2010 and 2011 and third in 2012.
Saddi is confident this year will be the best yet as the team stands top of the league and this could lead to playing at a higher standard next season and the possibility of facing world-class players she once looked up to.
Saddi has won countless medals, trophies and certificates since debuting for the club, including a League Cup winners' medal.
For a young girl who started off kicking a ball about in the parks dreaming of playing football at the highest rank, it was an amazing feeling for Saddi when aged 19 she was offered a scholarship in America with FirstPointUSA.
Exciting times, but she was unable to take up the offer due to financial circumstances, lack of support, prejudice and family who did not see such an adventure as a norm. Saddi was only left devastated.
"Sometimes good can come knocking at your door, but it's not always easy living the dream when in reality the mechanisms are not there," she said.

A opportunity missed, but this setback did not discourage the young star.
Instead she came back stronger, and realised it is also good to do more for others.
She undertook voluntary work as a community sports leader and made time to referee local tournaments and coaching when required.
Now a student at Coventry University, Saddi leaves no gap in making the most of her football-playing opportunities.
She represents Coventry University ladies first team, and working at Warwickshire County Cricket Club and her all-time favourite Birmingham City FC gives her the chance to meet other great sports personalities and offers the opportunity to travel with teams when on tour.
In August 2012, Saddi was part of a record-breaking event.
The women’s 20-hour futsal marathon record was hosted in Birmingham by sports personality and close friend Salma Bi, the first Asian female to play cricket for Worcestershire Women county side.
Salma, who overcame many hurdles of her own before making her mark in the world of sport, explained: "Things can be difficult to always begin with, but this is how dreams are achieved and when you are dedicated gradually others begin to believe in you and begin to see what you want from life, the goals and the reasons why you do what you love.
"With time things get easier and everyone makes a path for themselves.
"In Saddi's case the acceptance of playing football came while playing at school and her father arrived earlier than usual to collect her. He witnessed the talent Saddi actually has. This has helped her in many ways as he saw first-hand the passion Saddi has for the game.
"She is still young, a university graduate and still has the potential to play in the States.
"There are countless opportunities for Saddi yet to come but a lot more difficulties to face too. She sees football as her ultimate goal. If one door doesn’t open we are certain Saddi will find another door instead.
"We can only support more and more Asian girls to follow in these footsteps and we also need more and more role models so the journey is begun at an earlier age.
"Restrictions will always be in place, but it is down to you to go beyond your own expectations to achieve your goals.
"It's being recognised which is the crucial step and this is why young baller Saddi deserves to rub shoulders with top players.
"If anybody can achieve their dreams we know Saddi Shan can!"

GET READY FOR SOMETHING AMAZING!

WORLD DODGEBALL EVENT - AN AMAZING SUCCESS!

Team captains CHANTEL HUNTER, CHARLIE CHARMER, GEMMA SMITH, SALMA BI AND NATASHA PERRY

DATE: February 16, 2013
LOCATION: Birmingham International Futsal Arena
EVENT: World Dodgeball Championship 2013
ORGANISERS: Believe in MAD (Making a Difference) Foundation (Salma Bi); Sporting Pathways (Gemma Smith)

PROLIFIC fund-raisers Salma Bi and Gemma Smith spread their wings when they staged their latest sporting event.
Without much funding Sporting Pathways still managed to deliver a success through a sport which is not played much at all in the United Kingdom.
The sport was DODGEBALL.
The WORLD DODGEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP was held at Birmingham International Futsal Arena on February 16. The event was supposed to happen a month earlier, but the bad weather caused a postponement.
Five teams of six ladies took part and the whole day was a resounding success.
TY GOBAITH/HOPE HOUSE CHILDREN'S HOSPICE was the chosen charity to benefit from the fourth event organised by Salma and Gemma.
Based in the Conwy Valley, North Wales, Hope House provides specialist nursing care and support to life-limited children, young people and young adults.
Its support extends to the whole family from diagnosis, throughout the lifetime of the child and beyond.
Salma decided to support Hope House on the recommendation of her friend and PR agent Dave Jones, a North Wales based sports journalist.
The proceeds of the event were handed to Hope House at their office on Tuesday and the hospice was thoroughly delighted with an official letter of thanks on its way to Salma.
Salma and Gemma run two sporting charity organisations.
Award-winning cricketer Salma co-ordinates the charity Believe in MAD (Making a Difference) and Gemma, technical manager at the Birmingham Futsal Arena, is founder of the organisation Sporting Pathways which provides widespread sporting opportunities in the community.
Having already delivered three successful fund-raisers in 2012, the 10 AND 20 HOUR FUTSAL MARATHONS and the T10 INDOOR CRICKET WORLD CUP, MAD Productions and Sporting Pathways were ready to go that one bigger and better to start 2013.
World Dodge Ball 2013 was announced with six teams – six continents all set to go on January 19th but the weather got better of things making it risky for teams who were travelling and organiser had no choice but to postpone the date.
All that was left for now was to enjoy was the Dodgeball movie on January 18 on SKY MOVIES.
A 10 Day Countdown which hypes up the event BRAWL4ALL was routinely done but Salma and Gemma had to post up the 10 days again only to leave the final day this time before the new date, February 16.
Highlights included:
Gemma Smith #World DodgeBall Brawl4All Countdown# so the snow has got the better of us, even with the option of a mini bus, shame but it’s better to do it another day, I’ll get another date there will be no delay, for now sit tight in your seat, I know very soon we will meet. #westillgotgame
Salma Bi - Day 9-Not Long now, before we Meet. Forget History this is a New Sheet. Sit back tight in Ur Seat. You are Prey, It’s what the Cobras Eat.
Ready to raise the roof, organisers brought in a Bouncy Castle too! The promotions kicked off with the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=feK-9jeTO3U
Players arrived on the day by 2pm approx. but some players pulled out last minute which left 5 teams to participate instead of 6.
A neutral decision was made by combining two teams together and then selecting the captain.
Teams Announced:
American Coyotes: Chantel Hunter, Ily Oulkadi, Shareen Bi, Aman Kaur, Tina Daley Lakeru, Simi Panesar.
European Mammoths: Natasha Perry, Saphri Lines, Lucy Harper, Kayleigh Sage, Jo Rawlinson, Kirsty Lawie.
African Meerkats: Gemma Smith, Gemma Goode, Tami Young, Naiomi Melbourne, Sarah Tucker, Treena Greeves.
Arctic Whales: Charlie Charmer, Nicky Preston, Sophie Molyneux, Melissa Pace, Sam Taylor, Beth Poppleton.
Asian Cobras: Salma Bi, Aisha Bi, Dilara Begum, Vicky Roe, Saddi Shan, Indy Bharaj.
Guest players at previous events had travelled from Manchester, London, Wales and Yorkshire and this time the European Mammoths Team journeyed all the way from Brighton.
The Australian Kangaroos didn’t make it to the event but the show must go on!
THE EVENT
Team Captains in gear, referees in the know about rules, camera crew present, captains, team photos and Dodge Balls on the Centre Line, whistle at the ready and teams ready for the rush!
The games kicked off, each game lasting for 10 minutes and each team to play a team twice with leader board updates, Food, drinks provided...and action footage all recorded.
Matches were very intense and heart racing, Spectators looked on as teams Ducked, Danced, Dived, Dodged, and a few matrix and 007 Rolls around the Court.
No Head Shots counted but that didn’t stop the opponents from behaving like Animals.
Teams were lashing out on each other in the hope to wipe out full six players for elimination or just to survive for a draw if they had more players still live on the court.
Each team produced some great talent!
American Coyotes were the survivors of the Jungle who held onto the Dodge Balls.
European Mammoths looked like a well prepared Professional Dodge Ball Team.
African Meerkats chose to split up in two packs that sneaked upon the opponents.
Asian Cobras were busy shuffling, attempting a Slam Dunk that went wrong.
Arctic Whales mixed up players who sent out bait to the centre line and attacked from behind.
A Player of the Event Performance came from African Meerkats Naiomi Melbourne who was last man standing against the Asian Cobras, a 4 vs 1 match where she tackled her way through and managed to eliminate the opposing team!
A mixture of tactics, fun and arm breaking throws with superb efforts of surviving to qualify for the Semi Finals.
RESULTS after Each Team playing 8 Games
ASIAN COBRAS 90 4THPLACE
ARCTIC WHALES 320 2NDPLACE
AMERICAN CAYOTES 55 5TH PLACE
AFRICAN MEERKATS 270 3RD PLACE
EUROPEAN MAMMOTHS 350 1ST PLACE

It was the end of the trail for American Coyotes standing in 5th Place who wasn’t last, just not strong enough for the bigger beasts.
Captains were offered a Three-Man Elimination Match or 10 Minute Clockdown Match.
Referees agreed to stick with 10 Minutes which was then declared by points attained each game.

Semi-Final 1 European Mammoths v African Meerkats
A very Intense game. The African Meerkats showed true determination with a whole team effort but The European Mammoths were in full control of their land, Dodging Balls and taking catches forcing the Meerkats into Elimination.
Semi-Final 2 Arctic Whales v Asian Cobras
A match that was vital for both teams.
Guaranteed place into the final, all it took was a bite out the opponent. Nobody would have thought this but in the 10 Minute Match Arctic Whales were eliminated only to make a comeback and eliminate the Asian Cobras with two seconds to spare!
Referees offered captains for a Sudden Death or another 10 Minute Match and both agreed on another gritty gruelling 10 minute match.
All for glory both teams attacked when possible, The Arctic Whales looked strong with five minutes still remaining and now in a 2 vs. 1 player situation.
Aisha fought her way through trying her best to survive the electrifying blows from Nicky and Sophie. Chances were slim as the Cobras chanting take a catch for help began by doing the Mexican Wave in the hope of inspiration.
With still a minute remaining The Cobras were no size for the destruction of the Whales as Sophie landed a full blown throw to the final Cobra still standing.
Final European Mammoths v Arctic Whales
The showdown that depends on the World Dodge Ball Trophy Championship, a game for Survival of the Fittest and it was still anyone’s match with two hard hitting teams who both earlier in the rounds did beat each other once each.
The time ticked away and both teams began battle, with three minutes remaining only two players each side were out but soon the European Mammoths attacked their prey and came out on top.
Arctic Whales held on long enough but not enough to win, a mammoth of a battle which ended with First Ever Women’s World Dodge Ball 2013 Crowned Winners - EUROPEAN MAMMOTHS!
Natasha Perry, leading the team to victory, deserved the title for all day they showed charisma and team work.
